Information about Ablations

In recent years, clinical cardiac electrophysiology has experienced enormous growth. Catheter ablation procedures were developed over 15 years ago to target common arrhythmias with a minimally invasive catheter based approach. Arrhythmias originally treated with ablation included Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome as well as other common supraventricular tachycardias (SVT). Recently, however, the breadth of catheter ablation procedures has now expanded to encompass atrial fibrillation (AFib), as well as ventricular tachycardia (VT). In 1991 fewer than 1,000 ablation procedures were performed in the United States. By 1998 more than 16,000 had been performed. Current estimates by Medicare revealed that over 25,000 cases were performed in 2002 on Medicare patients alone.
